One Year After Assad’s Fall: Syria Marks National Day Amid Renewed Optimism and Official Tribute to the Nation’s Fallen Journalists
One year after the fall of the Assad regime, Syria marked its National Day with unprecedented unity. Tens of millions celebrated across the country, while Syrians worldwide gathered in front of embassies to honour a new chapter of freedom. At the heart of the commemorations was a powerful address by Dr Hamza al-Mustafa, Syria’s Minister of Information, appointed by President Ahmad al-Sharaa. Dr al-Mustafa paid tribute to the hundreds of journalists who were killed during the revolution and the Deterrence of Aggression campaign—figures he described as “the frontline of truth”. His speech also highlighted the government’s efforts to rebuild the nation after years of devastation, with coordinated support from international partners including Qatar, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the US, the UK, and the United Nations.
